aboriginal education team

Our Aboriginal Education Teacher provides individual and small group Literacy and Numeracy support for our Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander (ATSI) students in Reception – Year 6.

In collaboration with our Aboriginal Education Community Officer, Aboriginal Ear Health Screenings for Reception – 8 Year olds is carried out each year.

Throughout the year our students have the opportunity to participate in several annual cultural excursions such as Closing the Gap, Reconciliation Week, the NAIDOC March, Nunga Tag and Kids on Country. Each year, 4 – 6 of our Upper Primary ATSI students attend the STEM Conference. STEM is an approach to learning that integrates the areas of Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths. The students participate in workshops and listen to leading experts on STEM education, innovation and creativity.

We run the indigenous health progam MALPA, using old ways and new ways, teach young Aboriginal and non-Aboriginal people from Year 4 – 6 to become health ambassadors. The program has been running at our school for 8 years now and in 2023, we took our previous MALPA graduates to Pukatja (Ernabella) on the APY Lands to immerse them in a cultural exchange.

Our ATSI Student Achievement Data is monitored to provide interventions and curriculum differentiation. We also support teachers to implement the Cross Curriculum Priority of Aboriginal History and Culture into their teaching programs.

In  2023, we held our first ‘Night Under the Stars’ twilight event, providing cultural immersion for students and families. With performances in dance from Cultural Beats, giant games; jenga and naughts and crosses, a fire and yarning time. A sausage sizzle and an inflatable screen showing school videos, local dreaming stories and short films. Students were also treated to face painting by older students.

A priority of the Aboriginal Education Team is supporting our students’ well-being and the development of their leadership skills. Together, we are making a difference.
